Brisbane Bullets star Nathan Sobey has been added to the Australian Boomers squad ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games.

Sobey has been a standout in NBL21, sitting second in points at 22.4 per game as well as averaging 4.4 assists and 4.6 rebounds.

Boomers Head Coach Brian Goorjian noted that Sobey's performances in the NBL season were too hard to ignore.

“Nathan’s dominance and sustained consistency this season has been outstanding and led to his call- up to the Boomers squad.

“I know that he was really disappointed at missing the initial squad, but this didn’t deter him and the way that he has responded and taken his game to another level is a lesson for all players and he thoroughly deserves this opportunity.

“It’s great recognition and reward for Nathan and the Bullets who have provided a platform to excel.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do when he joins our squad in that environment”.

A member of the 2019 FIBA World Cup team, Sobey was also a part of the gold medal winning Australian team at the Commonwealth Games in 2018.

For Sobey, the selection comes after initial disappointment in not making the 24-man squad announced in February.

“It is always a special opportunity to have the chance to represent your country and I am very grateful to be picked for the squad.

“I was disappointed to miss out initially, but chose to work harder and was really focused on playing well for Bullets each week and leading by example”.

The Boomers pre-Olympic camp with take place in the USA during July with details still to be be finalised.
