Bevo Gives Insight into Potential Boomers

Stand in Australian Boomers head coach Rob Beveridge has given an insight into which players could be in contention for the team to that will take on Japan and Chinese Taipei in the upcoming FIBA World Cup qualification window.

With the NBL season not taking a pause, the usual names are unlikely to be available with Beveridge pointing to emerging talent alongside senior players plying their trade abroad making up the team.

In an interview with SEN Mornings, Beveridge provided an update on where the selection process is at.

"Basketball Australia has reached out to all of the teams in the League and we've collated a list of players that are potentially to be available," he explained.

"I would love to have those players, those veterans and senior stars and stuff like that but at this stage it definitely doesn't look like we'll be getting the main NBL players."

Pressed on specific names, 'Bevo' highlighted NBA Global Academy standout Tyrese Proctor as a player who they have their eye on as well as NBL Development Players.

"Players like Tyrese Proctor who is only 17 years of age at the Centre of Excellence is someone we're definitely looking at.

"We're going to try and nurture a whole lot of these younger players that will be future Boomers. Players like Tyrese Proctor, we'll look at. We're looking at a lot of the DPs in the teams as well.

"Although we won't have our so called 'studs' we're definitely going to put a competitive team on the floor. We're also obviously talking with players who are in Asia already and also Europe."

One such player who is currently in Asia is Boomers bronze medallist and former NBL star Nick Kay. Currently playing in Japan with the Shimane Susanoo Magic, Beveridge and Basketball Australia are already in discussions with the power forward from Tamworth.

"He (Nick Kay) is very high on the list. We've reached out to him, he's very keen so we've just got to go through that process because over in Japan they are stopping for the window so obviously he'll be a high priority to get him locked in."

As far a timeframe goes, he is hopeful that a team will be named next week with the games taking place in late February.

"We've got a selection meeting on Friday night. We had our initial one yesterday (Tuesday) another one on Friday to confirm and then we'll look to lock in the team next week."
