Will Canberra Cannons reload?

Monday, August 19, 2024
"I want to re-emphasise the NBL's willingness and interest in working with the ACT government and key stakeholders."
Canberra is back on the agenda at NBL headquarters with CEO, David Stevenson, revealing the League remains interested in the nation’s capital as a potential home to an expansion team.
Stevenson spoke about the city’s NBL hopes following meetings with ACT Chief Minister, Andrew Barr.
"I want to re-emphasise the NBL's willingness and interest in working with the ACT government and key stakeholders around an NBL team playing in Canberra," Stevenson told The Canberra Times.
"Based on our visit to Canberra last week and discussions with Chief Minister Andrew Barr, who displayed great energy and positivity around the NBL, we are encouraged about the potential of a team being re-introduced in the nation's capital.
"Something we made very clear in our discussions was our fans, clubs, players, partners and broadcasters expect world-class facilities to host NBL games, which the ACT government's proposed Canberra Convention and Entertainment Centre would deliver. The strong growth of the league with record attendances show the demand that fans have for NBL games.”
Barr confirmed the door remains wide open for talks to continue.
“The government welcomes NBL's interest in re-establishing a Canberra men's team,” he said.
Canberra played in the NBL from 1979–2003 as the Cannons, winning three championships in 1983, 1984, 1988.
