NBL returns to revamped HBF Stadium

Wednesday, August 21, 2024
The venue has received a significant facelift from when it last hosted the NBL on April 20, 2012
For the first time in 12 years, NBL basketball will grace the hardwood floor of HBF Stadium at HoopsFest next month.
However, the stadium will look a little different when the double-header of New Zealand v Brisbane and Cairns v Illawarra tips off on September 21.
Thanks to a $1.6m investment from VenuesWest, who own and manage HBF Stadium on behalf of the WA state government, the venue has received a facelift from when it last hosted the NBL on April 20, 2012, for game two of the Grand Final series between Perth and New Zealand.
Features of the upgrades include a brand new timber court designed to withstand varying climate conditions, enhanced LED lighting, new basketball hoops and backboards, and the hoists to allow a large scoreboard, which will be installed in time for HoopsFest.
The works also bring HBF Stadium up to Level 1 FIBA certification and make the venue suitable for NBL, WNBL, NBL1, and international basketball games, as well as giving the venue the ability to host high performance netball, volleyball and badminton events.
The Perth Lynx will also host three games at HBF Stadium during the upcoming WNBL season.
The exciting announcement was made Wednesday morning with Wildcats legend Andrew Vlahov and Lynx players Anneli Maley and Teige Morrell in attendance, alongside Deputy Premier and Minister for Tourism Hon. Rita Saffioti MLA, Minister for Sport Hon. David Templeman MLA, and others.

"Excitement is building for the inaugural HoopsFest, and with these upgrades at HBF Stadium, WA is set to become the epicentre of Australian basketball this September,” Minister Saffioti said.
“This investment in HoopsFest is already paying off. The inclusion of the Perth Lynx in this revitalised venue showcases our commitment to elevating women’s sports as we position Perth as a premier destination for major sporting events.
“This event not only boosts our standing as a major event host but also brings significant economic benefits and a vibrant atmosphere to our local community."
"Seeing the brand new court at HBF Stadium, ready for both HoopsFest and to host the Perth Lynx this upcoming WNBL season, only adds to the anticipation,” Minister Templeman said.
“The Perth Wildcats have a proud history and 10 seasons of their 31-year playoff streak were played at this venue. I’m sure many will jump at the chance to see NBL basketball make its return here.
“This investment is a testament to the WA Government’s commitment to supporting basketball and women’s sports in this state.
“With the Lynx set to play three games here, alongside the NBL action during HoopsFest, we’re showcasing Perth’s world-class sports infrastructure.”
HoopsFest begins on September 19 when Melbourne and Tasmania clash at RAC Arena.
