Information on Illawarra v Melbourne ending

Friday, October 25, 2024
It was a dramatic ending between the Hawks and United on Thursday night.
The NBL wishes to provide information pertinent to several issues from last night’s game between the Illawarra Hawks and Melbourne United:
- A technical issue caused a malfunction with the clock and it did not start when play resumed with 22.1 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. The referees were notified of the issue at the first available opportunity and the play was restarted. The prior sequence of play, including Will Hickey’s foul on Chris Goulding, was cancelled.
- Upon review, a technical foul was appropriately given to Illawarra coach Justin Tatum with 22.1 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
- Melbourne coach Dean Vickerman called for a timeout with 16.6 seconds left in the fourth quarter. The NBL can confirm Melbourne had used three timeouts in the second half (1:57 remaining in the 3rd quarter, 7:45 remaining in the 4th quarter, 4:51 remaining in the 4th quarter). Under FIBA rules, a technical foul is not automatically given to a team attempting to call a timeout if it does not have one available.
- The comments made by Justin Tatum in the post-match media conference are being handled by Basketball Australia under the National Integrity Framework.
