HoopsFest to remain in Perth?

HoopsFest to remain in Perth?

Wednesday, September 4, 2024

"I think what will happen is the people of Australia and Western Australia will vote with their feet."

Perth could become the forever home of HoopsFest if local fans “vote with their feet” and attend the events in droves according to NBL CEO David Stevenson.

The NBL season will tip-off with all 10 teams playing their campaign openers in Perth from September 19. The celebration of basketball will include a WNBL tournament, the U18 Australian Club Championships, Sneakerland, plus special guests NBA legend Carmelo Anthony, award-winning DJ Hayden James and more.

The basketball-mad city of Perth won hosting rights to HoopsFest and could become a permanent home according to Stevenson.

“That’s exactly what our plan is, both from the government and our side ... I think what will happen is the people of Australia and Western Australia will vote with their feet,” Stevenson told The West Australian’s The Dribble Podcast.

“If they come along in big numbers and enjoy it and the broadcast numbers are strong, then we’d love nothing more for that to be in WA in the future. We need to make sure that it’s as successful as it can be, but we’ve got a lot of confidence.”

A WNBL/NBL double-header will headline the opening night of HoopsFest at RAC Arena, with the Perth Lynx facing the Sydney Flames and an NBL Championship Series re-match between Melbourne United and the Tasmania JackJumpers.
