Australian Gangurrus v Azerbaijan/Spain 3x3: Game Report

Friday, August 2, 2024

The Australians had an impressive win over Azerbaijan, but fell just short against Spain.

It’s been a day of mixed fortunes for Australia’s 3x3 women’s basketball team, the Gangurrus, splitting their results across two games.

Off the back of strong performances from Marena Whittle (8 points, 5 rebounds) and Alex Wilson (7 points, 4 rebounds), the Australians defeated Azerbaijan 21-12.

Whittle hit three-from-four from two-point range in an impressive display of outside shooting.

It was the Gangurrus’ fourth straight victory of the tournament, but that winning run didn’t last long.

Coming up against Spain barely a couple of hours later, they fell to a 21-17 defeat.

Anneli Maley was the star for the Gangurrus, with 5 points and 7 rebounds, but the loss left them in third place overall on the standings.

With the top two seeds overall going directly to the Semi-Finals, the Australian team will now be hoping to finish on a winning note against France on Sunday morning, and then rely on other results going their way to automatically advance.

The teams placed from third to sixth will face off in the Play-In tournament, with the winners of the two matches to proceed to the next stage.

The Gangurrus will play France on Sunday at 2.35am AEST, with coverage available via the Nine Network and Stan Sport.
