Wildcats legend set for 16th season

Perth captain Jesse Wagstaff has signed a one-year contract extension with the Wildcats.

Perth Wildcats legend Jesse Wagstaff will extend his storied NBL career into a 16th consecutive season, after the 37-year-old signed a one-year contract extension with the club.

Wagstaff made his NBL debut back in 2009, and has won a tied-record six NBL championships across his career. He has also been named the competition’s Rookie of the Year, Best Sixth Man, and has been an All-NBL Third Team nominee over the journey.

The extension means Wagstaff will likely pass fellow Wildcats legend Ricky Grace to become the all-time leading appearance maker at the club, as he needs to play just nine more games to surpass the former import.

He could also become just the 14th person to play 500 career NBL games next season, with his games tally currently sitting at 474.

Wagstaff said it was an easy call to play on.

“It’s exciting, I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

“It happened pretty quick this year compared to previous years, but I’m super excited and I felt good throughout last year, so hopefully we can do a few better this year.

“In previous seasons I’ve wanted some time off, just to see how things unfolded ... this year my body felt good and I still felt good with what I was contributing on court, so I was probably mentally ready earlier to make that decision to go again.”
