Exciting Young Big Signs on With Perth

Wednesday, April 5, 2023
The Perth Wildcats have continued to bolster their frontcourt stocks heading into NBL24
The Perth Wildcats have continued to bolster their frontcourt stocks heading into NBL24, signing out of contract Melbourne United forward David Okwera to a three-year deal.
The acquisition of the 20-year-old big follows last week’s league-shaking announcement that back-to-back NBL Most Improved Player Keanu Pinder will also play for Perth next season.
Okwera started his professional career as a development player for United in NBL22, before earning a main roster spot last season.
His performances in the absence of injured centre Ariel Hukporti across the most recent campaign saw him establish himself as one of the most exciting local young bigs in the competition.
Originally from Western Australia, the move represents something of a homecoming for Okwera, who averaged 4.2 points and 3.3 rebounds in 28 appearances last season.
"David already has experience at the NBL level," Wildcats head coach John Rillie said. "With his best days ahead of him, he's an exciting addition to the roster.
"The Red Army can expect to see a versatile forward who has the ability to impact the game at both ends."
"David's size, length, and natural athletic abilities are very unique in a player with his versatility," General Manager of Basketball Operations Danny Mills added.
"We truly believe that in the program we're buiding here in Perth - with player development and a competitive daily environment at the core of what we do - David has the opportunity to really accelerate his growth.
"We have now brought another Perth born player home to come and play for the Wildcats."
Okwera's signing comes after the recent league-shaking announcement that Keanu Pinder would also be linking up with the Wildcats.
