Thursday, June 30, 2022
Will Weaver has interviewed for the Perth Wildcats head coaching job, NBL analyst Liam Santamaria has revealed.
Will Weaver has interviewed for the Perth Wildcats head coaching job, NBL analyst Liam Santamaria has revealed.
Weaver was head coach of the Sydney Kings in the 2019/20 season, which ended with the Wildcats defeating the Kings in the Grand Final series, after it was cancelled due to COVID-19.
Weaver then joined the Houston Rockets as an assistant, but has since left that role, and could be returning to the NBL.
“(Will Weaver’s) interview took place on Tuesday,” Santamaria told Free Agency Market Watch.
“He was sounded out - of course he’s no longer coaching with the Houston Rockets, having parted ways with them in recent times - and he is open to it.”
The Wildcats are searching for a new head coach after Scott Morrison recently stepped down from the role for family reasons.
“This is a team with Bryce Cotton on the roster, and a whole bunch of other talent, and a couple of other spots on the roster in terms of imports still to fill,” Santamaria added.
“My understanding is Will Weaver is open to it. He sat down, spoke with the interview panel, which I understand includes Danny Mills, Craig Hutchison, and a couple of other executives from SEN.”
Other names who have interviewed for the role include Australian Boomers assistant John Rillie and Tasmania JackJumpers assistant Jacob Chance, as reported by Lachy Reid on Channel 10 News in Perth. Santamaria also revealed that long-time NBL assistant Judd Flavell also received an interview.
“John Rillie was interviewed on Sunday and Jacob Chance was interviewed on Monday,” Santamaria said.
“A third guy, who was interviewed last year and has been interviewed again, is Judd Flavell, the former assistant coach at the South East Melbourne Phoenix and New Zealand Breakers. He's had 16 years in the NBL and has unbelievable experience.”
