"Unfinished business" for Phoenix stars

Nathan Sobey says he has unfinished business alongside former Adelaide teammate Mitch Creek.

It’s championship or bust for Nathan Sobey at the South East Melbourne Phoenix, and the All-NBL24 Second Team nominee believes the team being built at his new club gives him the best chance to achieve his goal.

Sobey has played a total of ten seasons in the NBL since breaking through with the Cairns Taipans in the 2014-15 season, and while individual accolades have freely flowed, a championship has eluded him.

The closest he’s come to winning the NBL’s ultimate honour was when he played alongside new teammate Mitch Creek in an Adelaide 36ers side that suffered a heartbreaking Game 5 defeat to Melbourne United.

That’s all I’m trying to do at the moment,” Sobey told Phoenix Media about his championship ambitions.

“It’s been a long away for the last few years, but I think with what we have and what we’re going to be putting together as a team is going to be exciting, and it will give us the best chance to put our best foot forward and give it a red hot crack.”

Creek is currently plying his trade in China over the NBL off-season, and although the star forward has left his immediate future in Australia’s domestic competition up in the air, he has asserted that the only NBL team he would play for next season will be South East Melbourne.

The former MVP candidate and multiple All-NBL nominee has established himself as one of the top players in the competition over the past two seasons, and Sobey believes his arrival at the club will help take some of the offensive pressure off South East Melbourne’s star man.

“He’s (Creek) proven over years how much better he’s got and how good he is in this league, so I’m keen to get back on the same team as him and help him any way I can, and try and take that load off him a little bit,” Sobey said.

“We kind of have unfinished business together, we lost in the Grand Final in the last year we played together so it will be good fun to get back into it together.”
