Star shooting guard Chris Goulding is set to stay in Melbourne for the foreseeable future, with the 33-year-old extending his contract with United for a further two seasons.
The club's all-time leader in games played (209), points (3342), three-pointers (675), assists (496) and steals (158), Goulding’s extension will keep him with Melbourne until the end of the 2024/25 season.
An experienced campaigner in the NBL, Goulding earned his break in the league as a development player with the Brisbane Bullets, before winning a championship with Perth in 2007. After a stint with the Gold Coast Blaze, he arrived in Melbourne with the Tigers in 2012.
The awards have kept coming for Goulding during his decade in Melbourne. He’s added two more NBL championships to his name, alongside a Grand Final MVP in 2018, four all-NBL selections, a scoring title and, of course, an Olympic bronze medal with the Boomers.
Speaking about his decision to stay with United, Goulding says he’s excited to stay where he feels at home.
“It’s exciting for me, it’s exciting for my family, and hopefully the club and fans are excited as well,” he told the club's website.
“Melbourne is my home and Melbourne United has been a big part of that. Being captain of the club and having successes within that role with two championships, it’s built a really special place in my heart.
“We are a club that strives for success and the ultimate success is winning championships, so that’s what I want to do for these next two years.”
Goulding has worked closely with United head coach Dean Vickerman since his appointment to the club in 2017. He says the announcement is a huge moment for both Goulding and the club.
“It’s amazingly exciting for the club to have our captain re-sign for a couple more years,” Vickerman said.
“He embodies the values of our club, he drives everyone to be better every day. When anyone thinks of Melbourne United, he’s the first person they think of.
“We want to continue building his legacy and I’m so pleased that we’ve got him locked in so fans can keep rocking his jersey and cheering along with him on every three.”
