Norton Excited for New-Look Wildcats

Times are changing at the Perth Wildcats. After their 35-year streak of making the finals was ended last season with a fifth-place finish, the team is revamping and retooling ahead of the upcoming season.

1998 NBL Champion John Rillie has taken the reins from former head coach Scott Morrison, while new imports Brady Manek and TaShawn Thomas are joining the evergreen Bryce Cotton and Cleveland draftee Luke Travers to form an exciting core. Veteran sharpshooter Corey Webster has also linked up with the side.

Long-time Wildcats point guard Mitch Norton says he’s excited for the new-look team to come together ahead of the new season.

“I think it’s very exciting. We haven’t got too many guys in town at the moment, but that’ll probably happen over the next week or so,” Norton told SEN.

“We’ve been able to discuss in team meetings what our goals are for this season and how we want to approach it.

“[I] had some time away but now I’m back on the floor champing at the bit. The first couple of games with new team members, new coach, there’s going to be a bit of a feeling out period but I can’t wait to get out on the floor.”

After a breakout season that saw him get drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the 56^th pick in the draft, Luke Travers will be returning to Australian shores and representing the Wildcats once more.

It’s been a dramatic rise for the emerging cult hero after winning a championship in his first season with the Wildcats as a development player in 2020.

Norton says he can see a change in Travers’ mindset since the young star’s strong Summer League performances.

“I think the confidence he brings now, it’s not over the top, it’s not cockiness or anything, but he has confidence in his own ability,” Norton said.

“We’ve tried to bring that out in him in years gone by, but it’s taken him some time to realise that no matter what level he plays, he belongs.

“It’s been great to have him back. He had a couple of weeks off but he hasn’t really stopped since the season ended.”

Norton himself has forged a reputation as a grit and grind defender who puts the team first, and there was no greater evidence of this than when the heart-and-soul player competed through injury to help lead the Wildcats to the 2020 finals.

A former finalist for the Defensive Player of the Year award, he says he's fit, healthy and excited for  Rillie's defence-first approach.

“Right the start he (Rillie) has come in with a defensive mindset. We’ve started this week just putting a couple of simple rules in place and I think the earlier, the better in terms of getting that stuff rolling,” Norton said.

“He’s been part of that Boomers culture as well so he obviously has that at the front of his mind, and defensively, that’s obviously where championships are won.

“I’m feeling really good, the body is fantastic ... there's no aches and pains which is a really good sign.”
