NBL welcomes proposed Gold Coast stadium

Tuesday, November 12, 2024
"We are encouraged and supportive of the exciting progress made on a potential new arena on the Gold Coast."
The NBL has welcomed news of a proposed new stadium on the Gold Coast.
Plans have been released for a 12,000-seat indoor arena in the heart of Southport, which could host up to 80 events per year.
NBL Chief Operating Officer Vince Crivelli said the prospect of a new venue further strengthened the league’s push for a team in the region.
“We are encouraged and supportive of the exciting progress made on a potential new arena on the Gold Coast,” Crivelli told News Corp.
“We have made no secret about our desire to establish a team in the region and, as with any expansion bid, a world-class venue is vitally important to any new NBL team.”
It’s expected the arena would be built by 2028-2029, in readiness to host events at the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
City of Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has previously thrown his support behind the possibility of a new team on the Gold Coast.
“We look forward to engaging with the relevant stakeholders in the future,” Crivelli added.
The league has posted its pre-season tournament, the Blitz, on the Gold Coast over the past two seasons, with strong attendance and interest from the local community.
