Basketball lovers in the Northern Territory have received a massive boost, with the NBL Blitz pre-season tournament set to be held in Darwin in early September.

The introduction of the Darwin Salties into the NBL1 North competition has showcased the appetite for the game in the city. With Melbourne United recruit Makuach Maluach and former 36er Tad Dufelmeier amongst their ranks, the Salties have gone 10-7 so far this season to sit sixth in the competition.

One of Dufelmeier’s former NBL teammates – current Adelaide and Boomers guard Mitch McCarron, says he can’t wait to return to his roots and play basketball in the Northern Territory.

“I think I was three years old when my family left Alice Springs so I’m keen to get back to the Northern Territory, I think Darwin is going to be awesome,” McCarron said on The Huddle Podcast.

“There’s a lot of interest and it seems like a really fun time when the Salties play. I didn’t get that road trip this year but teams have talked about how the games are fun, there’s a real buzz, and people are really into it.

“I hope they pack out the Blitz as well and we can set something up for the future.”

NBL Blitz begins on September 16 with South-East Melbourne taking on Adelaide.
