Magnay Set for "Interrupted" NBL24 Pre-Season

Thursday, June 22, 2023
A "foot complaint" is set to see Tasmania's Will Magnay experience another interrupted NBL pre-season.
Tasmania centre Will Magnay is set for another interrupted NBL pre-season according to JackJumpers Co-CEO Jorrick Chivers, who says the former NBL Most Improved Player is currently working through a “foot complaint” suffered in the off-season.
Magnay appeared in nine games for Spanish Liga ACB side Obradoiro following Tasmania’s elimination from the playoffs, where he averaged 3.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.
He has appeared in just 33 games across the last two seasons for the JackJumpers having previously played for the Perth Wildcats upon his return from the New Orleans Pelicans.
Magnay experienced a late start to NBL23 due to a knee injury, but Chivers is hopeful the centre will be ready to go come the JackJumpers’ season opener in September.
“He picked up a knock in Spain which means we’re not 100 per cent sure of what his timeline is,” Chivers said.
“He’s got a foot complaint – I’m not a medical expert so I’m not sure of an exact diagnosis.
“He’s up in Brisbane at the moment and receiving treatment but we know his pre-season is definitely going to be interrupted.
"He’s not going to be ready to go day one of pre-season but we’re hopeful he should be ready to hit the court at the start of the season.”
The JackJumpers centre stocks have been filled out over the past 24 hours after the club announced the signing of former Melbourne United centre Marcus Lee for the upcoming season.
Chivers believes Lee will not only be able to work well in tandem with Magnay, but the 28-year-old’s presence on the roster will help take some pressure off the former Brisbane Bullet.
“If you look at the splits Will was playing that 15-20 minutes a game last year and Marcus will complement that as well,” Chivers said.
“We can either go as a twin towers combo and play together or they can share their minutes across the board.
“With Will’s body it gives him a chance to make sure is body is 100 per cent healthy and ready to go for the season.
“It takes the pressure off him as in previous years where he’s our only legitimate big rim presence guy.”
