2010 NBL MVP Corey Williams has declared Kings guard Dejan Vasiljevic needs to play at his best in order for Sydney to claim the championship for the second year in a row.
The Kings are into the Championship Series against the New Zealand Breakers, who are looking to break a seven year title draught.
Vasiljevic is arguably one of the most impactful guards in the league, possessing a scoring ability to change the complexion of games in an instant.
“He’s going to have to play consistent and play big this series for them to win,” Williams said on NBL Overtime.
“Dejan Vasiljevic has not had a good season, not to the standard that we hold him to.
“He’s shown glimpses, we know how good he shoots the ball and he’s a legitimate threat on the court. He’s going to have to come out huge.”
The Kings defeated the Cairns Taipans in the Playoff Series, but Vasijevic struggled with some poor shooting during the three games, with Williams saying he needs to do more.
“He’s really the x-factor for this team, he didn’t really do anything this season,” Williams said.
“It’s getting to a point where it’s going to be something like, if he doesn’t show up they’re not going to win.
“They will not win this series, that’s how important he is.
“Five games to play your best basketball, that’s the beauty of this game when you advance to the grand finals.
“You’ve got to bring you’re A-game right now."
Game 1 of the best-of-five Championship Series between the Sydney Kings and New Zealand Breakers tips off on Friday 3rd March at Qudos Bank Arena at 7:30pm AEDT. Watch live and free on ESPN via Kayo Freebies, 10 Peach and 10 play, and Sky Sport in NZ.
