Cairns Taipans star Keanu Pinder is set to miss his team's upcoming road double in Illawarra and Brisbane, the club has confirmed.

Controversy surrounded Pinder's health last week, with Taipans coach Adam Forde claming he was "targeted" by Melbourne United in the teams' Round 12 clash.

United hit back in a statement, rejecting those claims.

Pinder suffered a lateral ligament strain on his left ankle during the game on December 23, and missed Cairns' win over Adelaide.

He is considered one of the favourites for the NBL's MVP Award, boasting averages of 17.8 points and 9.9 rebounds across the season so far.
