Gerrity: "Future Is Bright" For Travers

It was hard to miss Luke Travers during the NBA Summer League.

It was hard to miss Luke Travers during the NBA Summer League.

It started with the mullet, as he drew comparisons to former Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird. The familiar number 33 sparked that conversation even further.

But by the end of the tournament, the plot had changed in the USA … this guy can play.

The 56th pick at the recent NBA Draft, Travers quickly made his presence felt for the Cleveland Cavaliers in Las Vegas.

“I think it’s really good just having this opportunity to just see him (Travers) up close, watch how he plays, get familiar with him, get to know him,” Cavs assistant coach and Summer League head coach Mike Gerrity told The Athletic.

“I think all those things are key moving forward, for the time that he does come back to us. I remember our time with Cedi (Osman), and we got to know him first, and then he came back later on, and he was ready to play.”

Travers will return to the Perth Wildcats to further fine-tune his game in the NBL in 2022/2023.

At just 20-years-old, he’s got plenty of time to develop. But even with barely 115 minutes’ experience to his name at Summer League, the emerging star showed he’s got plenty of upside in the NBA.

“I think the future is very bright for Luke,” Gerrity said.

“We saw a ton of flashes throughout the week of what he’s capable of doing, and he can impact the game in so many ways.”

Travers averaged 6.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.2 steals and one block in his Vegas stint, showing his ability in all areas.

“We got a really good one there, and I’m glad that we were able to get some time with him before he goes into next season,” Gerrity added.

“I think just being able to familiarize with his game and seeing how he can be used and seeing how he can help this team. He’s shown it with his versatility how he can impact the game.”
