NBL Free Agency affords players around the competition the opportunity for a fresh start, and that’s an opportunity Brisbane’s Isaac White has grasped with both hands.
The former Illawarra Hawk and Tasmania JackJumper was among the first signings announced once the free agency window opened on April 1 when he, along with Sam McDaniel, were named as Brisbane’s two newest players.
The Bullets have since gone on to sign exciting collegiate talent Josh Bannan, while Tanner Krebs, Jason Cadee and Gorjok Gak have all departed the club, and White says he’s excited for the opportunity to help forge the club’s new identity.
“With the options that were in front of me this seemed like the best opportunity to grow and showcase that role I’m trying to own,” White told the Brisbane Bullets website.
“The fact it’s a new start, it’s kind of a clean slate for the most part - I think is a really exciting opportunity to come in and be a part of the identity of the program moving forward.
“I feel like the two-year [contract] situation too is awesome. This is the first time in my career I’ve signed a multiple-year deal, so a little bit of stability is awesome.”
After beginning his career under coaching legend Brian Goorjian at Illawarra before receiving tutelage from former Dallas, Golden State and Toronto assistant Scott Roth, White has learned from two of the most experienced heads in the Australian basketball landscape.

In Brisbane though, he will be coached by first-time NBL head coach Justin Schueller who, despite his impressive coaching resume to date, is an unproven commodity at this level.
White says he’ll bring the teachings of his previous mentors into his new side.
“Playing under ‘Goorj’, he taught me so much about how to treat people,” White reflected. “I think x’s and o’s are important, but Goorj was so good at fitting pieces around each other.
“That’s where I developed this thing about diving into my specific role and owning ‘this is what I am, I can shoot the ball, I can be up in the full court and that’s how I can build a career’.
“Under Scott Roth, if you can do your role defensively and play your role for the team then on offence you can be free, be yourself and just have fun.”
