Basketball Australia has announced their four 3x3 teams that will be competing at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Six-time NBL champion Jesse Wagstaff leads the way once again, after winning the tournament MVP at the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup over the weekend. He was a member of the Australian Boomers team which won the gold medal in the conventional 5x5 format at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
“To be selected for the Australian Commonwealth Games team and represent my country once again is a dream come true,” Wagstaff said.
“I love basketball 3x3’s physicality, speed and intensity. Once we get on the court it’s all systems go, which makes it a fantastic spectator sport.”
Wagstaff will team up with 3x3 veteran and NBL1 player with the Sandringham Sabres Thomas Wright, Adelaide 36ers star Daniel Johnson and former Wildcat Greg Hire for the first 3x3 tournament to be held at the Commonwealth Games.
The Women’s 3x3 team will include Opal Lauren Scherf and WNBL veterans Lauren Mansfield, Marena Whittle and Alex Wilson.
For the first time, both able-bodied and Para-basketball teams will be competing together for the first time at the international level. Including such Olympic stars as Amber Merritt, who has been a member of the Australian Gliders since 2009, winning a silver medal at the London 2012 Paralympics and was on the Gliders in the Toyko 2020 Paralympics.
The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will be held from Thursday, July 28 to Monday, August 8. 3x3 Basketball events take place from Friday 29 July to Tuesday 2 August at Smithfield in the heart of Birmingham's city centre.
