NBL Owner Praises "David vs Goliath" Story

NBL owner Larry Kestelman has heaped praise on the Playoff-bound Cairns Taipans and has labelled the culture of the club as the difference maker in their pursuit of NBL23 glory.

The Taipans open their Playoff series against the Sydney Kings on Wednesday night and are looking to make their first Grand Final series since the 2015 loss to the Breakers.

Cairns finished the season on top of the ladder on that occasion but were eventually swept by New Zealand.

“It’s a great story, David and Goliath, and what the organisation in Cairns has done is nothing short of incredible,” Kestelman told News Corp.

“You put them together with the performances from the JackJumpers last year, what it does for me is it shows how amazing the NBL is from a competition point of view.

“You have two teams of I think 150,000 and 500,000 are up there against the might of all of New Zealand and all of Sydney.

“It’s about culture, it’s what makes the difference … the job they’ve done is nothing short of incredible.”
