NBL owner Larry Kestelman is excited for the Sydney Kings and New Zealand Breakers to go head-to-head in a “dream” Championship Series.

Kestelman spoke on SEN radio and emphasised how close he thinks the Championship Series will be.

“It is a bit of a dream. It will be very close and a very tight series,” Kestelman said.

With both teams hungry to claim the crown, enthralling stories on both ends is what makes this series one of the biggest ever.

Sydney was the champions last season and have the chance to become the reigning Kings of the NBL for the second year in a row. It would be the club’s first back-to-back titles since their 2003-2005 three-peat.

The Breakers have had a championship draught for seven years, with the last two seasons being destroyed under COVID restrictions, as the club has had to pack their lives into suitcases and live out of Australian hotels.

“Sydney has been the best team in the competition for the last couple of years, that’s something that’s pretty obvious,” Kestelman said.

“But New Zealand with their trials and tribulations the last couple of years, it’s an incredible story.

“Considering what they have suffered, being dislocated from New Zealand through COVID, you can’t help but be super happy for them as well.

“You’ve got the Australia vs New Zealand rivalry, and there will also be a lot of Australians cheering on the underdog in New Zealand.”

Game 1 of the best-of-five Championship Series is on Friday March 3rd at 7:30pm AEDT at Qudos Bank Arena.
