Justin Robinson
26 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists | 48 SuperCoach ppg

The Justin Robinson that turned up against South East Melbourne is the Justin Robinson Illawarra thought it was getting 12 months ago, and while both the Hawks and Robinson have endured their own separate struggles since Round 1 last year, the former NBA guard was worth the wait.

Robinson looks to have shaken off the rust that comes with being sidelined for almost a year with serious injury, and offered the support Tyler Harvey desperately needed last season to help the Hawks over the line in a close game.

He was hitting tough shots, getting his teammates involved, grabbing rebounds and just being a general star in Illawarra’s first win of the season.

More of the same please.

Nathan Sobey
27.5 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals per game | 41.5 SuperCoach ppg

After never really getting going in NBL23, Nathan Sobey looks to be back to his Olympian-level form this season. While his Bullets faltered at the finish line and lost their chance to go 3-0 in their second game of the round, it wasn’t for lack of output from the star shooter.

Brisbane endured two close games in Round 2, and there’s no doubting who their star man was in each of those games.

First he played a game-high 35 minutes and dropped 24 points and 8 assists to help Brisbane walk out of New Zealand with an impressive win, before he put the team on his back with a 30-piece in the heated loss to Queensland rivals Cairns.

The now 33-year-old was an MVP finalist alongside Bryce Cotton and Tyler Harvey as recently as NBL21, and he’s reminding people why at the start of this new season.

Will Cummings
19.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals per game | 36.5 SuperCoach ppg

With all the former NBA talent that’s gracing the league this season, Will Cummings has offered a stark reminder that those who have dominated the European scene have just as much superstar potential in this league.

South East Melbourne’s center crisis meant it did not emerge from Round 2 with a win from either fixture, but Cummings’ performances – particularly against Illawarra – are cause for elation amongst the fanbase.

He was solid in the Phoenix’s low-scoring loss against Cairns but exploded for a game-high 28 points in their shootout loss to Cairns. He wasn’t only scoring either, he was active on defence and pulling in boards.

In pre-season Cummings said he can switch his offensive game between scoring or distributing to help the team, and the clash with the Hawks showcased the best of both skillsets for the 31-year-old.

Bobi Klintman
17 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2 blocks per game | 35.5 SuperCoach ppg

Jaylin Galloway announced himself onto the scene in Round 1 of NBL24. This weekend, it was Bobi Klintman’s turn.

The Next Star was absolutely electric in all aspects of the game in both of Cairns’ clashes this weekend, and was a key reason in how the Taipans emerged victorious in tight wins over South East Melbourne and Brisbane.

The first-round draft projection was everywhere for the Taipans and showcased just how ready he is to step up and compete in the professional game, and his defensive attributes already look to have improved in leaps and bounds while working under Adam Forde.

Just how high could this kid fly? Who knows, but enjoy him while you can hoops fans.

Jaylen Adams
18.5 points, 6 assists, 2 steals per game | 34 SuperCoach ppg

The former MVP was doing MVP things for the Kings this weekend, and was so locked in even the lights going out at Qudos Bank Arena couldn’t stop him from finding the bottom of the net.

Tasmania’s stifling defence locked down most of Sydney’s offensive sets in the Kings’ opening clash of the round, and Adams offered almost single-handed resistance across all four quarters for his side alongside scoring spurts from Alex Toohey and Jonah Bolden.

Then against Adelaide Adams typically starred. Every time the 36ers made a run back into the game in the high-scoring contest, Adams was scoring or assisting to keep any resistance at bay and guide the Kings to victory on their banner raise night.

Patrick Miller
22 points, 4.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists per game | 33.5 SuperCoach ppg

When Patrick Miller was signed to the Taipans, there were questions raised over if he would start over emerging local guard Taran Armstrong. Injury to Armstrong meant Miller was handed the keys to Adam Forde’s car at the start of the season, and now it’s likely his position to lose.

The European journeyman formed an incredible one-two offensive punch with Next Star Bobi Klintman that rocked opponents in Round 2, but it wasn’t just the case of the point guard handing the ball to someone else to score – Miller was an all-around offensive problem for Brisbane and South East Melbourne.

One of the most impressive things about Miller is his ability to not only put defences under pressure by getting to the line, but hit his free throws at an ok rate. He went 15/20 over the weekend in total, and if he and Tahjere McCall can both continue to draw fouls at the rim then defences could be forced to try some funky line-ups to stem the flow of fouls.

Sam Froling
17 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists | 34 SuperCoach points

South East Melbourne entered its clash against Illawarra with no recognised rostered centre, and Sam Froling took full advantage of playing against an undersized line-up.

We’ve seen Froling step out and hit the three at a consistent clip over his young career so far, but with Alan Williams, Tyler Cook and Gorjok Gak sidelined he took advantage of the size mismatch offered by the Phoenix’s small-ball line-up and took all his shot attempts inside the arc, while also attempting seven free throws.

He was strong on the boards and ended with a game-high eight rebounds, and showcased his stretch talents by dropping dimes as opposed to hitting threes.

It feels like Froling has been around forever and is a well-established NBL talent, so it’s easy to forget he’s just 23 years old.

There’s always been plenty of pressure on him to perform as the go-to big in this Hawks team, and the inside domination of this performance offered an insight into why he’s so highly rated by Boomers coach Brian Goorjian.

Milton Doyle
23 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2 assists per game | 32.5 SuperCoach ppg

Is Milton Doyle the most clutch player in the NBL? If anyone offers a systematic ‘no’ to that question, point them in the direction of Tasmania’s fourth quarter against Melbourne United.

Doyle struggled to get his shot going early-doors against Melbourne and was instead playing more of a distributor role in the JackJumpers’ second game of the round, but when the chips were down and the game was there to be won – he stepped up big time.

The JackJumpers were down by as many as 13 points in the final quarter, and Doyle stepped up to drop 14 points in the final stanza to lead his team to a five-point win.

Of those 14 points, 12 came in the final six minutes.

Add his slightly grittier but equally impressive performance in the close win over Sydney, and the NBL23 All-NBL First Team nominee has himself a round to remember.
