Bogut wants top job

"Coaching the Boomers would be a phenomenal honour and the end goal for sure."

A day after confirming he’s joining the Sydney Kings as an assistant coach under Brian Goorjian, Andrew Bogut says being head coach of the Boomers is his “end goal”.

In his regular column for basketball.com.au, the 40-year-old outlined his new position and future aspirations.

“Coaching the Boomers would be a phenomenal honour and the end goal for sure, but coaching in the NBL is something I’d be more than content with,” he wrote.

“… the NBA is probably out of the question for me, although you never say never.”

And he’s not afraid to do whatever it takes to get to where he wants to go, even if it means rolling up his sleeves and possibly “lacing em up”.

“I assume I will be doing some scouts, I assume I will be doing some film, I assume I will be doing some individual workouts with guys on top of the team stuff. I’ve got no issue with it, I’m not afraid of the hard work,” he declared.

As for what kind of assistant he’ll be? Well, he’s not going to be backwards in coming forwards, which won’t surprise anyone.

“I’m not scared to give my opinion on things, I’m not scared to call things as I see them. At times, Goorj might take that advice or take that recommendation and at times, he won’t.”

Since his retirement as a player, Bogut has become an accomplished businessman and is a co-owner of the Kings, but feels now is the time to get back closer to the action.

“I’ve been thinking about when I push the button and then the circumstances presented themselves and there was an opening,” he said.

“You can’t do it (play the game) with your body anymore, the older you get, so the next best thing is doing it with your brain.”

And as far as he’s concerned, there’s no conflict of interest.

“It’s quite funny seeing people online say it’s a conflict of interest. I’m not sure how that works if I happen to be a minority owner too? What am I conflicting? Will I want the performance to not go well anymore? Comical stuff.”
